Welcoming a new baby is one of the most exciting and precious times in life. Capturing those sweet, sleepy newborn moments with professional photography is a wonderful way to preserve those memories forever. If you’re wondering when to schedule newborn photos, here are some important things to consider.

1. Schedule newborn photos within the first two weeks

The ideal window for when to schedule newborn photos is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this time, babies are still very sleepy and curl naturally into those adorable poses that make newborn photos so special. They’re also less likely to be fussy, making it easier to capture calm, peaceful shots. However, this timeframe can pass quickly—especially as you adjust to life with a newborn—so planning ahead is key.

2. Flexibility for health needs

Every baby and birth story is different, and sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. If you or your baby needs extra time, such as recovery from a C-section or a NICU stay, don’t worry! Many newborn photographers, including myself, are flexible with scheduling. Whether it’s a delayed session or photographing your baby a little older than two weeks, the goal is to capture your family’s joy, not add stress. The best time for when to schedule newborn photos might be a bit later in this case, and that’s ok! I have worked with lots of older newborns for a myriad of reasons.

3. Book Your photographer early

Because babies don’t always arrive exactly on their due date, it’s a good idea to reserve your photographer well in advance—ideally during the second or third trimester. Newborn photographers often have limited availability, and by booking early, you can ensure a spot on their calendar around your due date. If needed, your photographer can adjust your session date once your baby is here.

Do you remember the days visiting your grandparents, pouring over albums upon albums of family photos? Your parents' lives spread out on the pages before you. Photos leading to stories, leading to long-forgotten memories, recalling details from days long ago.

I do. It was always my favorite pastime visiting my grandma, the family documentarian. Now the task has passed down to me, documenting the days as they go by, keeping the record for my nieces and nephews, for my own children to come.

Now think of your children, ten, twenty, fifty years from now. What will they have to look back on to remember a time they were too young to recall themselves.

It would be my honor to be your family's documentarian, too! Forever chronicling your journey together with timeless portraits that your family will enjoy for generations to come.
