Things I have learned this summer doing newborn sessions in Virginia. First, front porch newborn portraits need to be a thing! And second, if you have a dormer in your house, be prepared to take photos in it!

Sweet Eliza’s newborn portraits were taken in the middle of the a big heat wave in Virginia this July. It was toasty outside, so I was glad to be in the cool A/C for newborn portraits. I am pretty sure I broke a sweat just unloading my car! God bless mamas with summer babies because, I could not imagine being nine months pregnant with this heat!

Let’s begin in the nursery. Eliza’s nursery was sweet and pink and had this gorgeous gold gilded mirror that I about died when I saw! If you have done newborn portraits with me, you know I love a good mirror.

I immediately fell in love with the light in Taylor and Caleb’s master bedroom and you can see why! So bright and airy, it was as if the room was designed for these photos!

They also had a dormer window, which I had previously discovered reflects light gorgeously, so naturally we took advantage of that with some portraits crammed in the little dormer. But, can you really even tell it’s a tight space?

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Mama with her lovely neutral dress – I love the contrast of her dress with her dark hair! We added a little box that matched Taylor’s dress and it was newborn portraits magic.

Taylor’s brother was in town, so he even got to hop in for a few portraits with his niece! I love when visiting family gets to take advantage of the portrait session, as well. Framed prints make for such a lovely gift!

We took some time for Eliza’s portraits on the beanbag. She was awake for most of the time but it still made for some precious alert images that I know her parents will cherish forever.

Finally, Taylor and Caleb asked to take some portraits on their adorable front porch, complete with rockers and gladiolus, so how could I say no! After doing some outdoor newborn portraits just week prior with sweet Connor and his parents, I am beginning to see that outdoor newborn portraits are a must! Eliza’s porch portraits made the Virginia summer look like a dream. All that’s missing was some sweet tea!

Do you remember the days visiting your grandparents, pouring over albums upon albums of family photos? Your parents' lives spread out on the pages before you. Photos leading to stories, leading to long-forgotten memories, recalling details from days long ago.

I do. It was always my favorite pastime visiting my grandma, the family documentarian. Now the task has passed down to me, documenting the days as they go by, keeping the record for my nieces and nephews, for my own children to come.

Now think of your children, ten, twenty, fifty years from now. What will they have to look back on to remember a time they were too young to recall themselves.

It would be my honor to be your family's documentarian, too! Forever chronicling your journey together with timeless portraits that your family will enjoy for generations to come.
