Richmond holiday family photo of parents with daughter in Christmas Tree farm

This year, Christmas in July has inspired me to round up a few (or maybe a little more than a few!) of my favorite Richmond holiday family photos. Leading up to the holiday season, I get to collaborate with my clients on capturing their family’s holiday and Christmas portraits. Incorporating festive and seasonal nods into these photos is special to celebrate this time of year. However, I also like to be intentional about keeping a timeless aspect to these photos to be enjoyed year-round.

With growing families and kids of different ages, I like being creative with posing and props for holiday family photos in Richmond. How precious is the toy car with the tree on top? I encourage my clients to have fun and play, leading to candid and natural photos.

What to wear for your Richmond holiday family photos

Personally, I love winter and the colder temperatures that bring fall and winter clothing—currently missing that right now in July! These families did a beautiful job of dressing for the season in neutral and holiday tones. I enjoy being a resource for my clients as they are planning their outfits and giving insight on ensuring the outfits are cohesive with one another. It can be overwhelming to plan everyone’s outfits so I’m here to help alleviate that stress.

There are a few ideas I would recommend for your holiday family photo outfits:

  • Pick a pattern: Nothing says the holidays like a gorgeous plaid or tartan! Pick one you love and dress the rest of the family in the colors from the pattern with some neutrals.
  • Stay classic: You can’t go wrong with rich reds and deep greens. Add a touch of gold or silver for an extra holiday vibe.
  • Choose textures: Chucky sweaters, layers, leather boots all help to elevate your family holiday photos
  • Mimic nature: Take inspiration from the changing leaves – Burnt orange, rust, hunter green and mustard yellow is a timeless autumnal palette.

Virginia House in the West End of Richmond is one of my favorite locations for family holiday portraits. The architecture is stunning and the gardens are a lovely place to enjoy the fall foliage!

I hope you enjoyed this round-up of family holiday photos! It is making me crave cooler weather. I cannot wait for this year’s holiday portrait event!

Do you remember the days visiting your grandparents, pouring over albums upon albums of family photos? Your parents' lives spread out on the pages before you. Photos leading to stories, leading to long-forgotten memories, recalling details from days long ago.

I do. It was always my favorite pastime visiting my grandma, the family documentarian. Now the task has passed down to me, documenting the days as they go by, keeping the record for my nieces and nephews, for my own children to come.

Now think of your children, ten, twenty, fifty years from now. What will they have to look back on to remember a time they were too young to recall themselves.

It would be my honor to be your family's documentarian, too! Forever chronicling your journey together with timeless portraits that your family will enjoy for generations to come.

A photo is worth a thousand memories
