Table of Contents
Byrd Park – Top Family photo locations in Richmond va
Just next to Maymont is Byrd Park, which has numerous backdrop options portraits including acres of tall trees, the Carillion building, the pump house, dogwood dell amphitheater, Swan Lake and Boat Lake, which has cherry and dogwood blossoms in the spring (Late March/early April). Byrd Park is a great Richmond Va family photo locations all year round! No permit required and dog-friendly.

Ideal for fall portraits with its big, leafy trees along the three ponds, and spring family photos with the dogwood blossoms.
Forest Hill – Top Family photo locations in Richmond va
I find Forest Hill park to be such an underrated Richmond Va family photo spot! I love the old stone house as a backdrop, it gives “historic European farmhouse,” in my opinion. During the fall, the big trees are full of colorful leaves and in the spring, there is lots of grass and florals to accentuate your photos. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike down to the pond for a secret garden feel!

A quiet park with rolling green fields, cute buildings and lots of big trees make for a great Richmond Va family photos location
Agecoft Hall or Virginia House
This is a two for one deal, since they are both historic locations right next to each other in the Mary Mumford neighborhood. Both manor houses were moved to Richmond piece by piece from England in the twentieth century. Technically, these locations are not free to rent, but since I include location fees in my booking structure, they’re essentially free to you! Stunning homes with expansive and lovely gardens – both are a joy when choosing a location in Richmond for family photos!

Perfect for those wanting Richmond Va location family photos in a traditional garden with European-inspired architecture.
Bryan Park Richmond Va family photos location
This park is a hidden gem if you ask me. It has acres of rolling hills and big trees, plus a lovely trail loop that blooms azaleas in the spring. In the fall the canopy of autumn foliage is just gorgeous! Bonus dog-friendly and super easy parking!

A-not-as-frequented Richmond Va family park with lots of green in the spring and summer!
James River family portraits
The trails along the south side of the James River are one of my favorite places to shoot. I love the way the light peaks through the trees at the end of the day. The lush woods diffuse the light beautifully in the spring. summer and fall – but it’s even gorgeous during the dead of winter! Bonus points that it is dog-friendly and no permit required. Trails can be muddy at times but nothing the proper shoes won’t fix!
